Gardens and grounds....

Potting Sheds (North (on left) ca. 1890, rebuilt 1993; South,
1918)
Various greenhouses and related structures have been located in this
area from at least the time of William Jay in the 1830s. The late
19th century saw the Jay family farm producing flowers and
vegetables for the New York City market. A large greenhouse stood to
the south of the sheds, but only the foundation remains. In the
foreground is an herb garden. Although it was not part of the
greenhouse complex, it is typical of John Jay’s time. The shed to
the north (L) is a modern reconstruction, which was funded by the
Friends of John Jay Homestead. During the rebuilding, a long-forgotten cellar that once
contained heating apparatus for the greenhouses was discovered.
