THE TEACHING GARDEN
John Jay Homestead and InterGenerate are partnering for the second year to bring a vegetable garden to the Homestead.  InterGenerate is bringing agriculture back to the Katonah Farm and in the traditional farming spirit, this plot of land will provide food for 10-12 people who will work the land together.  This group will plant and harvest together in community and will have help from experienced gardeners from InterGenerate who will serve as guides and teachers.

In addition, we'll have harvest suppers in the garden and possibly classes in food preservation, freezing, canning, pickling and drying encouraging greater intradependence for residents of Westchester County. For more details on the program and how to join.

InterGenerate: Planting Tomatoes, Growing Communities

InterGenerate is a local non-profit committed to building sustainable communities on a healthy planet.  Having founded the InterGenerate Community Garden at Marsh Sanctuary, the Westchester Community Garden Network and the last year’s Teaching Garden at John Jay Homestead, InterGenerate has experience in community and communal gardening.  This year, they have also founded the Heritage Egg Co-op at the Homestead and are working closely with Neighbor’s Link and the Mt. Kisco Food Pantry to create the opportunity for equal access to fresh, local, organic food for all residents in Northern Westchester.

The Garden Last Year

THE DETAILS

The growing season will begin on Saturday, April 15th as we prepare the land for a new and bountiful growing season and will end with our last harvest on Saturday, October 1st. The cost for registration is $100.

Members are free to work in the garden at any time, but Saturday morning is designated as a communal work day when the whole garden community can come together.

To Register or If You Have Questions, Contact Peggy Clarke: pclarke@uuma.org.

OUR TEACHER

Suzi Novak is our primary teacher and curriculum developer. Suzi has been growing her own vegetables at her home in Chappaqua for almost 15 years and eats within 100 miles of her home year round.  After learning about the effects on our environment that result from transporting food, Suzi learned how to reduce her family’s carbon footprint by eating locally. Much of her diet comes from the land on which she lives.  Suzi is a veteran teacher of over 30 years and is bringing her considerable talents to our garden this spring.
