BEEKEEPING SCHOOL

Due to a renewed interest in the benefits of local food, and recent news reports concerning the vulnerability of the honeybee population, there is a growing interest in hobby beekeeping. The skills needed to successfully care for honeybees are best learned through a hands-on approach.

John Jay Homestead and Bedford Bee Honeybee Service are establishing a 12 colony apiary and hosting a series of 13 beekeeping workshops throughout the summer of 2011. The colonies in the apiary will be used as a "laboratory" to practice beekeeping skills. Each workshop will consist of one hour of classroom time in the Homestead's Main Barn, and an hour and a half of hands-on time at the apiary.

Enrollment in the workshop series is limited. The fee for the series is $160. Individual workshop attendance is possible, based on availability, for a $20 fee. Workshops will be held on Saturdays from 10:00am-12:30pm. The schedule below lists workshop dates and topics:

4/23:   Hive building and set up

5/7:     Package bee installation and honeybee safety

5/21:   Honeybee life cycle

6/4:     Swarms, drones, and queen cell formation

6/18:   Honeybee diseases

7/9:     Splits, requeening, combining colonies, manipulations

7/23:   Varroa mite life cycle and detection
